The UAE continually evolves its regulations to improve the quality of life for residents. This year, Dubai has introduced several new rules, from revised Golden Visa requirements to a comprehensive ban on single-use plastics. Here’s a rundown of the key 2024 updates that could impact life in Dubai:

1. E-Scooter Ban on Public Transport

Starting March 1, 2024, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) banned the use and carrying of e-scooters on Dubai metro and tram services. This move is designed to enhance safety for public transport users. However, e-scooter regulations for buses remain unchanged, leaving room for further updates on public transportation policies.

2. Comprehensive Ban on Single-Use Plastic Bags

As of January 1, Dubai has enforced a ban on single-use plastic bags. Exceptions include packaging materials for items like meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, grains, and bread, as well as garbage bags. The ban was introduced as part of Dubai’s initiative to reduce plastic waste. Non-plastic single-use products will also be phased out by June 1, 2024. Non-compliance with this rule will lead to fines starting at Dhs200. This regulation is in line with Abu Dhabi’s similar policies, where single-use plastic products were already banned in 2022.

3. Paid Parking Introduced at Dubai Mall

In collaboration with Salik, Dubai Mall will implement a paid parking system in Q3 2024. Using barrier-free, automatic payment technology, Salik will charge parking fees directly to customers' accounts via license plate recognition. Details about pricing are yet to be announced, so stay updated for further information.

4. Temporary Suspension of UAE Raffles and Prize Draws

The popular Mahzooz prize draw, which has created over 64 millionaires, has temporarily halted its operations as of January 1, 2024. This pause follows a new mandate by the UAE’s gaming regulators to establish a well-regulated commercial gaming environment across the country. The suspension reflects the UAE's ongoing commitment to regulatory compliance and oversight in the gaming industry.

5. Lowered Minimum Driving Age and Stricter Penalties

The UAE has lowered the minimum driving age to 17, allowing younger residents to obtain a driving license. Alongside this change, Dubai Police have introduced stricter penalties for traffic violations. Offenses like using a mobile phone while driving, tailgating, or abrupt lane changing can now result in vehicle impoundment for up to 30 days, reinforcing the UAE's dedication to road safety.
